Etsy Listing Translator

Etsy’s help says a listing is translated automatically for buyers browsing in another language, and that a translation you enter yourself replaces the automatic one for that language. This page gives you the translation to enter: paste one listing, tick the languages you sell in, and get its title, description and tags translated to fit Etsy’s limits — ready to paste into the Translations fields of that listing. The translation runs inside your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Thirty listings in five languages is a hundred and fifty pieces of text. Pasting each one into a translation site and back is an afternoon, and nothing there tells you when a German title has quietly grown past Etsy’s 140-character limit, or when a translated tag went over 20. This page shortens what will not fit and names what it shortened, so you can see it before you paste.

1. In Shop Manager, open the listing and find its Translations section. Etsy shows a translation form for each language you have enabled for your shop (Shop Manager → Settings → Languages).
2. Copy the translated title, description and tags from this page into the fields for that language, one language at a time.
3. Save the listing in Etsy. Etsy’s help says a translation you enter yourself replaces the automatic one for that language.

That description of Etsy’s form comes from Etsy’s own help pages; the exact layout is Etsy’s and may change. This page never touches your shop — it cannot log in, publish, edit or delete anything.

It translates the three fields Etsy lets you translate by hand: title, description and tags. It shortens any title over 140 characters and any tag over 20 characters, drops tags beyond Etsy’s 13, removes duplicates, and tells you what it changed instead of quietly cutting. You can edit every line before you paste it.

It is machine translation, made by the translator built into your browser. It is a first draft for a market you cannot read yourself, not a substitute for someone who speaks the language. It is not a bulk lister, not an SEO tool, and it does not connect to Etsy’s API.

The first time you use a language, the browser downloads that language pack (a few tens of megabytes, once); you will see the progress here. Languages the browser cannot translate on your machine are named as such rather than skipped.

Your listing text stays in your browser — it is handed to the browser’s own translator and never sent to us, because there is no server on our side that could receive it. Three things are counted here, and all of them are nothing but a path: when the page loads, which one of 4 fixed words describes the translator in your browser (absent, available, downloadable, unavailable), followed by the short name of our own link you followed to get here when you arrived by one (for example available-from-home), which says which of our pages sent you and nothing about you; when you translate, that a translation into a given language happened (the language code and the date); and, when you press the unlock button, that it was pressed — never what you pasted, translated or paid. No cookie, no IP address, no text.

Your own browser does keep a few things in this site’s storage, on this browser only, and none of them are ever sent anywhere: whether you have unlocked, the code you unlocked with, and — while you are on the free try — which language you picked today and a short fingerprint of the listing you translated. The fingerprint is a length and a number worked out from your text, not the text itself; it is there so that one listing a day means one listing. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes all of it, including the unlock — the code puts it back.
