In Etsy’s own words, and what the calculator does with each one.

• Listing fee. Etsy charges “a listing fee of $0.20 USD for each item that you list for sale”, and a listing with more than one in stock “will be automatically renewed at $0.20 after each of the items sells”. So each item sold carries one listing fee; the calculator counts one item per order. If your payment account is not in US dollars, Etsy converts this fee “at the market rate”, which is why the calculator asks what 1 USD is worth to you.
• Transaction fee. “A transaction fee of 6.5% of the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping.” If you sell from the US, it “will not apply to sales tax”. Anywhere else, your listing price should already include the taxes you are responsible for, and the fee applies to all of it. A personalization fee “is added to the listing price you display”, so put it in the item price.
• Payment processing fee. “Payment processing fees vary based on the location of your bank account”: a percentage plus a flat fee per order, for example 3% + 0.25 USD for a US bank account. It is charged on everything the buyer pays: “The payment processing fee is assessed on the total amount of the sale, including tax and shipping.” The rate for every country is in the table below.
• Offsite Ads fee. Only on an order placed “within 30 days of that click”, the click being a buyer’s click on one of the ads Etsy buys for your listing on other sites. • Transaction fee: 6.5% of $30.00 = $1.95
• Payment processing: 3% of $30.00 + $0.25 = $1.15

Etsy takes $3.30, which is 11.0% of the $30.00 the buyer paid. $26.70 reaches your Etsy account, and after $12.50 of your own costs you make $14.20.

If the buyer also pays $2.40 of US sales tax, only the processing fee changes: 3% of $32.40 + $0.25 = $1.22, and Etsy takes $3.37.

If the order came from an Offsite Ad at 15%, add 15% of $30.00 = $4.50. Etsy then takes $7.80, which is 26.0% of what the buyer paid, and you make $9.70.

An $800 item from an Offsite Ad

15% of $800.00 would be $120.00, but the fee on one order stops at $100.00. With the listing fee, the transaction fee of $52.00 and processing of 3% of $800.00 + $0.25 = $24.25, Etsy takes $176.45.

A £25 item with £4 shipping, sold from the UK

Say 1 USD is worth 0.75 GBP that day.

• Listing fee: USD 0.20 × 0.75 = £0.15
• Transaction fee: 6.5% of £29.00 = £1.89
• Payment processing: 4% of £29.00 + £0.20 = £1.36
• Regulatory operating fee: 0.48% of £29.00 = £0.14

Etsy takes £3.54. If Etsy also charges you 20% VAT on its fees, that adds £0.71, for £4.25.

Working backwards

To make $20.00 from a US order with $5.00 shipping and $12.50 of costs, charge $31.41 for the item. At $31.40 you would make $19.99.

• Etsy Ads. You set a daily budget for them, so they are not a fee on any one order.
• The shop set-up fee. A one-time fee some new shops pay; Etsy shows it while you open the shop.
• Deposit fees. In some countries Etsy takes a flat fee from deposits below a threshold. They are in the table above, but they depend on how much you deposit at once, not on one order.
• Listing fees on items that do not sell. A listing on Etsy expires after four months, and renewing it costs another listing fee whether or not it sells.
• Shipping labels you buy on Etsy. They are a cost, not a fee: put them in your costs.
• Subscriptions and other ways of selling. Etsy Plus, a Pattern website and in-person sales through Square each have their own fees.
• Income tax, and the tax on your sales. Those are between you and your tax authority.

We saved the text of Etsy’s three pages on the day we read them, and a test compares the calculator with that text: the 6.5%, the $0.20, the 15% and 12%, the $100 cap, the 2.5%, and all 64 rows of the processing-fee table, character for character. The same test runs every worked example above through the calculator’s code and fails if any figure moves by a cent. To check that it can fail, we changed the transaction fee from 6.5% to 6% and the US processing rate from 3% to 3.5%, and it failed both times.

What we have not done is check these figures against a real Etsy statement. Etsy can also change its fees at any time; the date at the top is when we last read them.
